Enter your next renewal date and the notice your contract asks for. You get the latest day to mail a certified letter so it reaches the company in time.

The day you would be charged again or the term renews.

Which date does the company count?

Mail it by Thursday, November 19, 2026. 24 days from today.

Latest safe date to mail your letter

Thursday, November 19, 2026

24 days from today.

Your company needs the notice at least 30 days before Friday, December 25, 2026, so it has to arrive by Wednesday, November 25, 2026. First-Class Mail can take up to 5 delivery days. Counting back 5 days, and skipping Sundays and USPS holidays, gives Thursday, November 19, 2026. Mailing a few days earlier gives you room if the letter is slow.

How the date is worked out

  1. Start from the renewal or billing date.
  2. Count back the notice period in calendar days. That is the date the company must have your letter, or the postmark date if your terms count the day you send it.
  3. If that date falls on a Sunday or a USPS holiday, move to the last day mail is delivered before it.
  4. Count back 5 delivery days for First-Class Mail. Sundays and USPS holidays do not count as delivery days.

The date you land on is the latest safe day to mail the letter. USPS says First-Class Mail is delivered in 1 to 5 days and that a Sunday or holiday is not included in the expected delivery time. The calculator plans for the longest case, 5 days. USPS also notes that delivery time is not guaranteed, so an earlier mailing date is always safer.

Received or sent: which date counts?

Some contracts say the company must receive notice by a date. Others say you must send it by a date. If your terms do not say, plan for received, because that date is earlier and covers both readings.

When only the sending date counts, ask the clerk at a Post Office counter to hand-cancel the envelope so it carries that day's postmark. USPS does this for free. A Certificate of Mailing, available for an added charge, is an official record of the date you sent an item.

The USPS holidays the calculator skips

USPS observes 11 holidays. When one falls on a Sunday, the Monday after is the holiday. When one falls on a Saturday, it stays on the Saturday and the Post Office is open the Friday before. The calculator works the dates out from these rules for any year.

Why certified mail

Certified Mail is a USPS extra service. USPS says it gives the sender a mailing receipt, a tracking history and, on request, electronic verification that the item was delivered or that a delivery attempt was made.

That record is the proof you are asking for: the date you mailed the letter and the date it reached the company.

If the date has already passed

Send the letter today. Say in it that you are cancelling, give the date you are sending it, and ask the company to honour the date it arrives. The delivery record from Certified Mail shows that date.

If the company also takes cancellations in your online account or by phone, do that on the same day too and note the time.
