Gym contract cancellation law in District of Columbia

Gym contracts in District of Columbia are covered by D.C. Code section 28-3817, which sets out when you can cancel. The non-waivable right to cancel runs through the first 15 days after the sale, by certified or registered mail. After 15 days the buyer can still cancel for death, illness, injury or a change in residence. Quote the statute in your letter so the club can see the rule you rely on.

What this means when you cancel

  1. Find your dates and notice terms

Start with the paper you signed. List its length, its notice period and the address for notices, then read the matching points of the District of Columbia law so you know where you stand.

  2. Quote the statute in your letter

Say in one sentence that you are cancelling under D.C. Code section 28-3817. Then ask for written confirmation and for all future charges to stop.

  3. Mail the notice with tracking

Send the signed letter by Certified Mail with Return Receipt. The receipt shows when it was mailed, and the return card shows who accepted it.

  4. Do not discard anything yet

File your copies together and watch your next two statements. If the club charges you after the date your cancellation took effect, your papers are the proof.

If the club ignores your District of Columbia notice, your proof is the record you will need for a refund request or a card dispute.

Send your cancellation by certified mail

Tell us the company you want to leave. We write a formal cancellation letter, mail it by certified mail the next business day and send you the delivery proof.
