Gym contract cancellation law in Louisiana

La. R.S. 51:1577 and 51:1578 is the statute that applies when you cancel a gym contract in Louisiana. The contract must give a right to cancel before midnight of the 3rd business day, with a refund within 15 days. Cancellation is also allowed if the center goes out of business, moves an outlet more than 10 driving miles without an equal one within 10 miles, or fails to finish construction within a year (section 1577). Quote the statute in your letter so the club can see the rule you rely on.

What this means when you cancel

  1. Compare your contract with the statute

Open your signed contract and mark its notice period, its end date and where notices go. Hold those against the Louisiana statute so you know which rule gives you the earliest exit.

  2. Write the statute into the letter

Say in one sentence that you are cancelling under La. R.S. 51:1577 and 51:1578. Then ask for written confirmation and for all future charges to stop.

  3. Send the signed letter with proof

Use certified mail, not a regular stamp. You want a postmarked receipt and a delivery record that you can show if the club says it never received your notice.

  4. Keep your proof together

File your copies together and watch your next two statements. If the club charges you after the date your cancellation took effect, your papers are the proof.

A short, dated, written notice that cites La. R.S. 51:1577 and 51:1578 gives you a clear record in Louisiana.

Send your cancellation by certified mail

Tell us the company you want to leave. We write a formal cancellation letter, mail it by certified mail the next business day and send you the delivery proof.
