Gym contract cancellation law in Wisconsin

If your gym is in Wisconsin, Wis. Stat. section 100.177 is the law to check first. Fitness-center contracts must state a right to cancel until midnight of the 3rd operating day after signing. The term may not exceed 2 years. Check your contract against the statute before you write, and keep the dates on both in front of you.

What Wisconsin law says

Each point here comes from the Wisconsin statute linked below. Statutes have exceptions and definitions, so read the full section before you rely on one point.

  • Fitness-center contracts must state a right to cancel until midnight of the 3rd operating day after signing.
  • The term may not exceed 2 years.
  • If the buyer cannot use the services because of death or disability, they owe only the elapsed-time share of the price.
  • A proportional refund also applies if facilities become unavailable.

What this means when you cancel

  1. Set the contract beside the law

Open your signed contract and mark its notice period, its end date and where notices go. Hold those against the Wisconsin statute so you know which rule gives you the earliest exit.

  2. Quote the statute in your letter

Write the statute into the letter by its citation, Wis. Stat. section 100.177, and state the date you are cancelling from. Keep the wording short and calm. Our letter template shows the layout.

  3. Mail it with a receipt

Use certified mail, not a regular stamp. You want a postmarked receipt and a delivery record that you can show if the club says it never received your notice.

  4. Save every document

Hold on to every document, including the delivery record, until the club has stopped billing you.

Send your notice early. In Wisconsin the dates in the statute and in your contract both count, and a late letter can cost you another billing cycle.

Send your cancellation by certified mail

Tell us the company you want to leave. We write a formal cancellation letter, mail it by certified mail the next business day and send you the delivery proof.
